Wallpaper calculator
Guessing at wallpaper usually ends with a roll too few halfway through the job. Enter the wall dimensions, pattern repeat and roll size and you’ll have the number before you reach the shop.
Wallpaper calculator – how many rolls?
Wallpaper is hung in full drops, so we work out how many drops fit on a roll (roll length ÷ ceiling height + pattern repeat) and how many drops the walls need – giving the right number of rolls even for tall walls and large patterns.
An estimate. A standard roll is often 10.05 × 0.53 m. The pattern repeat is on the wallpaper – large patterns give fewer drops per roll. Buy an extra roll from the same batch as a reserve.
This tool gives an estimate and is an aid – not a finished calculation. Always check the result against drawings, applicable regulations, supplier data and your professional experience before giving a binding price, ordering material or using the file. ByggExp is not responsible for decisions made solely on the basis of the tool.

How to work out the number of rolls
- Work out the wall area to be papered (m²).
- Enter the roll’s area (often about 5 m²).
- Add waste for pattern matching.
- See how many rolls you need.
Tips
Buy all rolls from the same batch (same batch number) so the colour matches, and take an extra roll as a reserve.

Frequently asked questions
- How many m² does a roll of wallpaper cover?
- A standard roll often covers about 5 m², but it varies – check the wallpaper and enter the value in the calculator.
- Why do I need extra for the pattern?
- Patterned wallpaper needs the pattern matched between drops, which creates more waste. The larger the pattern, the larger the allowance.
- Should I deduct windows and doors?
- For small areas you can use the gross wall area for margin. For large openings you can deduct them, but always keep some reserve.
- Does it cost anything?
- No, the calculator is free and requires no account.
