Gravel & crushed stone
Order the right amount the first time. The calculator turns your area into both the finished volume and the looser quantity you actually order – compaction included – and gives the weight in tonnes for gravel, crushed stone, topsoil or sand.
Gravel & crushed stone – volume and tonnes
Enter the area and depth and we work out the volume in cubic metres and the weight in tonnes. Works for gravel, crushed stone, topsoil and sand – adjust the density to the material.
Gravel and sub-base are delivered loose and compact by ~15–25%, so you order more than the finished (compacted) volume. Density varies: gravel/crushed stone about 1.5–1.8 t/m³, topsoil about 1.2–1.5. Check with the supplier.
This tool gives an estimate and is an aid – not a finished calculation. Always check the result against drawings, applicable regulations, supplier data and your professional experience before giving a binding price, ordering material or using the file. ByggExp is not responsible for decisions made solely on the basis of the tool.

How to work out the quantity

- Measure the area’s length and width in metres.
- Enter the depth in centimetres.
- Choose the material’s density (t/m³).
- See the volume in m³ and the weight in tonnes.
Allow for compaction
Material compacts after laying, so allow a little extra if the depth must hold once the surface is settled. The calculator does this for you: the “to order” figure is the loose quantity, always larger than the finished volume.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I work out how much gravel I need?
- The volume is length × width × depth in metres. A 10 × 3 m area at 10 cm depth is 3 m³. The weight is the volume times the density.
- How much does a cubic metre of gravel weigh?
- Gravel and crushed stone often weigh about 1.5–1.8 tonnes per m³, topsoil about 1.2–1.5. Enter the density in the calculator.
- Is gravel sold in tonnes or cubic metres?
- Often in tonnes on delivery and in cubic metres when estimating – so the calculator shows both.
- Does it cost anything?
- No, the calculator is free and requires no account.
